Minimum Qualifications

Age Requirement

Must be at least 21 years of age, or applicant must reach their 21st birth­day by the time of completion of the academy.

Residency

No residency requirement. Must be a citizen of the United States.

Education/Work Experience

You must have either:

A minimum of 32 semester credit hours from an accredited university or college. Both require a cumulative average letter grade of “C” or a cumulative GPA of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale or equivalent.

A high school diploma or GED with one year full-time prior police experience or two years of active military service or four years of National Guard/Reserve service. Police experience can be in a professional staff position with the St. Louis County Police Department designated by the Chief, to include the Department’s Cadet Program. 

Five years of successful work experience. Successful work experience is defined as:

    • Continuous full-time employment, averaging 30 hours or more per week; and
    • Overall positive reviews of work performance from employers; and
    • No negative terminations of employment; and
    • Multiple employers are acceptable if the above factors are met.

Out-of-state police officers/military peace officers who possess or obtain State of Missouri POST class “A” certifica­tion will be evaluated in conjunction with their education/work experience. Visit the Missouri POST website for additional information.

Vision

Minimum Department standard is 20/200 in each eye, uncorrected; correctable to 20/20 in each eye, and is free of color blindness.

Arrest Record

Free from conviction of a Felony or any other criminal offense that would prohibit the applicant from obtaining a Missouri POST Class “A” license, if none currently held.  All convictions for a Class “A” Misdemeanor will be cause for a review and authorization from the Chief of Police.

Driver’s License

Possess a valid operator’s license at the time of appointment and have five (5) or fewer points against their operator’s license at the time of application.

Illegal Drug Use

Has not used any illegal controlled substance as defined by the Missouri State or Federal statutes, excluding marijuana, within one (1) year prior to date of submission of application.

Military

Must not have a Dishonorable or Bad Conduct Discharge from the military service. Honorable Discharge and General Discharge (Under Honorable Conditions) are accepted. Discharges other than honorable shall be reviewed on an individual basis, if applicable.

Competitive Selection Process

Under the regulations of the Police Department, all appointments to the St. Louis County Police Department are made through a continuously open, competitive hiring process conducted under the supervision of the Personnel Services Unit. Online applications are accepted anytime at https://www.governmentjobs.com/careers/stlouis?keywords=Police. Paper applications are welcomed between 8:00 AM and 4:00 PM, Monday through Friday. Each applicant must successfully complete each stage of the selection process before proceeding to the next step.

The hiring process takes about 2-3 months to complete.

Application

Applications for Police Officers positions may be submitted online or in paper form. Supporting documents will be requested as applicants move forward in the hiring process. Applications are reviewed by the Personnel Services Unit to verify qualifications and ensure eligibility for the position. Applications receive a record check prior to receiving an invitation for testing.

Testing

Applicants complete a basic, entry-level police officer test, a personality assessment, a Trigger Pull Assessment and Physical Agility Assessment. Amazon offers several study guides for police officer testing. The Physical Agility Assessment consists of sit-ups, push-ups and a 1.5 mile run. Testing is held at St. Louis County Police Department Headquarters and the St. Louis County and Municipal Police Academy. The basic, entry-level police officer test is waived for police officers with 5+ years of full-time experience. Testing times vary between 1-4 hours with scoring after each category. Applicants will be fingerprinted after successful completion of testing.

Field Investigation

Applicants submit requested documents, interview with a Background Detective, and complete a polygraph interview.

Commander Evaluation & Final Review Board

The Personnel Services Commander evaluates candidates’ overall ability for the position, focusing on mental alertness, self-expression and suitability for police officer duties. Executive Command Staff conduct the final evaluation. This stage determines whether a conditional job offer is made or the selection process ends.

Physical & Psychological Exams

Applicants undergo a physical and psychological exam to confirm their ability to meet the demands of the position. Exams are completed after a conditional job offer is extended.

* Employees of the Department are on probation for 12 months. Officers receive bi-weekly pay. Starting pay for experienced officers and the full pay matrix is shown below.
